Solar PPA questions, answered

Everything you need to know about going solar with no upfront cost.

The basics

What is a solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)?

A solar PPA lets you use solar power without buying the system. We fund, design, install and own the solar PV system on your property. You buy the electricity it produces at an agreed tariff, up to 30% below what you pay the municipality or Eskom.

Do I pay anything upfront?

No. There is no capital outlay, no installation fee and no maintenance charge. You pay only for the solar electricity you use.

Who owns and maintains the system?

We do. 8m20s owns the system and handles all monitoring, maintenance and repairs for the life of the agreement.

How much can I save?

Solar electricity under a PPA costs up to 30% less than municipal or Eskom rates. Annual tariff increases are set out in your contract. Kommetjie Primary School saved R23,011 in its first year, ahead of the R21,000 we projected, and is on track for about R2.2 million over 20 years.

Tariffs and contracts

How much does the solar tariff increase each year?

Annual tariff increases are agreed upfront and set out in your PPA contract, so you know in advance how your tariff will change.

How long is a PPA contract?

Contract terms are tailored to each organisation and set out in your written PPA proposal, along with the tariff, system size and expected savings.

Who is a PPA suitable for?

Schools, businesses, farms, wine estates and body corporates with a monthly electricity bill of R15,000 or more and most of their use during daylight hours.

Battery backup

Can I add battery backup to a PPA?

Yes. Battery storage can be included in your PPA so essential loads keep running during load-shedding and outages. It is sized to your critical loads and set out in your proposal.

Installation and compliance

How long does installation take?

Typically 2 to 3 weeks, scheduled to minimise disruption. Before that, a 4-week data logging period measures your real demand so the system is sized correctly.

Who handles approvals and compliance?

We handle submissions to the municipality or Eskom, the Department of Public Works, and the WCED or other governing bodies. Every system receives an electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and a Pr Eng commissioning report, and is designed to meet SSEG requirements.

Is my roof strong enough?

Our structural engineer reviews roof loading and signs off the PV design before installation.
